What Apple's win over Samsung means for Android

Apple has been awarded $1bn in damages from Samsung for infringing on its utility and design patents covering the iPhone and iPad. The verdict means Android device makers are going to have to think carefully about their products going forward - and Samsung is probably going to suffer a setback in the U.S. market. Apple's next move may be to seek import bans on Samsung devices that the jury has found to be violating its patents. That includes the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones but does not affect all Samsung phones and tablets. However, an "Apple tax" may be put on future devices as the damages payment will leave Samsung substantially out-of-pocket. This will also affect developers who have created software and apps for phones such as the S II and may make other phone producers such as HTC ultra-cautious when creating new devices in future. Additionally, as Samsung and Android spend time re-engineering their products - this may be just the opportunity that Microsoft and Nokia need to establish Windows Phone as a serious contender to the iPhone.
