NewsCorp looks to the future of paid-TV content with Roku purchase

Roku

Roku is a media streamer that allows you to push video and music content from the internet to your TV. Its main competitor is Apple TV - but Roku costs half the price. News Corp and BSkyB have just invested US$45m to expand Roku's current organisation and push forward with the 'Roku Stick', which packs all the features of the Roku's small box but shoves straight into the back of your TV.

The reason that News Corp see this as such a strategic purchase is that it could open up paid-for streaming of content over the internet - without the need for a cable contract. Browsing channels could become just like browsing apps, except these channels will have most of your favourite shows available at any time - and you would only pay for what you watched.
