Starbucks will use Square's payments platform to process all of its credit
and debit transactions. Starbucks will also invest US$25m in funding the
future development of Square. Square, founded by Twitter inventor Jack
Dorsey, has quickly made accepting credit cards via a mobile phone a
mainstream an affordable concept for smaller merchants. Starbucks is its
biggest deployment to date, which opens the door for other big businesses
signing up to Square. This partnership could see a huge burst of mobile payments
occurring and signifies a dramatic step in the evolution of digital
transactions in real life. Additionally Square's platform allows retailers to
recognise customers as they walk into store - which will transform Starbucks
ability to personalise their service.
